Chip Sealing
Overview
Chip sealing consists of applying an asphalt emulsion and covering that with a thin layer of chips (rocks).
Chip sealing seals in small micro cracks and restores friction to the driving surface.
Surface is able to protect original pavement from UV rays.
Loose chips are swept up typically within 2 weeks of application.
End Result
One advantage of chip sealing is that the road can be open to traffic almost immediately.
Pavement surface is rough, provides good friction, after the first winter, the surface is smoothed out by the plows.
